A 'Mussel Raft' Tackles Bronx River Pollution: The hope is that someday these filter feeders can be deployed on

Larissa Graham/Long Island Sound Study Scientists from a NOAA laboratory in Milford, Conn., retrieving water quality monitoring instruments from the “mussel raft” installation in the Bronx River near Hunts Point in the South Bronx. Off Hunts Point in the Bronx River estuary is a raft that looks like a dozen others you might see near any beach that city kids dive from. But this one is being used for an experiment in pulling nitrogen pollution from water, using Atlantic ribbed mussels dangling on lines from the raft to take up what sewage treatment plants miss. The idea is simple enough: mussels are filter feeders. Among the things they eat are algae and small plankton. Both of those take up nitrogen as a nutrient, which is one reason that algal blooms proliferate near sewage treatment plants. The phenomenon is called eutrophication , and the result is that water is depleted...
