UK misses 2010 renewable energy target

The UK has missed its 2010 renewable energy target to produce ten per cent of electricity from renewables, figures show. Data from the Department for Energy and Climate Change and Ofgem show that instead, the UK produced just 6.5 per cent of electricity from renewable systems. The Renewable Energy Foundation (REF) has analysed the government data and called into question how this happened when large amounts of funds and investment had been made into low carbon technology. "In spite of very high costs to consumers, the 2010 target has been missed by a large margin, and that consequently the EU 2020 target is plainly beyond reach," remarked Dr John Constable, director of policy and research for REF.
