Researchers Create New Type of Solar Cell Tuesday, June 26th 2012 4:55 PM By GetSolar Staff. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology made a breakthrough that may lead to highly efficient solar cells. The new solar technology is capable of absorbing light from the infrared spectrum. According to a recent Phys.org article, "40 percent of the solar energy reaching Earth’s surface lies in the near-infrared region of the spectrum." The all-carbon solar cells open up the possibility to create solar panels with both traditional and new technology, which would allow rooftop solar panels to harness the full spectrum of light to produce electricity. The researchers' findings were published in the journal "Advanced Materials." The new technology is the first all-carbon cell, reported Phys.org.
