Cyclists saved the UK £40 million and tonnes in CO2

Britain’s cyclists saved the economy more than £40 million last year according to estimates by sustainable travel charity Sustrans. The UK’s biggest increase in cycling use of the National Cycle Network last year saw an extra 40 million extra journeys made on bike than in 2010, Sustrans reveals at the start of Bike Week. According to the charity’s new report ‘The Real Cycling Revolution’, 484 million journeys were made by bike or foot on the national network of paths and quiet streets in 2011, bucking the trend of a national decline in cycling and walking on our roads, as reported by National Statistics. This increase had a positive effect on both the economy and the nation’s carbon dioxide emissions. If all the journeys made on the National Cycle Network in 2011 had been made by car, 760,363 tonnes of carbon dioxide would have been emitted, costing the national economy £4...
