Scientists question shale gas eco-benefits

Extracting gas from shale could pump more greenhouse gas into the air than coal mining, oil drilling or even extracting conventional gas, according to a new study which calls into question the growing use of shale gas as a 'green' alternative energy source. Researchers from Cornell University, Ithica claim to have conducted the first peer-reviewed paper on methane emissions from shale gas , and one of the few studies exploring the greenhouse gas footprint of conventional gas drilling. Published in Climatic Change Letters , the paper argues that methane leaking into the atmosphere during hydraulic fracturing could generate a greenhouse gas footprint for shale gas at least 20 per cent greater than the carbon footprint of coal. Methane is a far more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, but also has a 10-times shorter removal time in the atmosphere, so its effect on glob...
