How climate change is affecting Brazil's electricity production:

Hydropower - generating electricity from dams in rivers - emits far less CO2 than using fossil fuels, but it’s not without social and environmental impacts. And as shown by a new study carried out by WWF in Brazil, under the HSBC Climate Partnership, it’s increasingly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Our study focuses on the controversial US$12 billion Belo Monte hydro-electric dam project, which it’s predicted may lose more than 80% of its annual revenue by 2050 as a result of diminishing river flows from the Xingu River, a large Amazon tributary. Carlos Rittl, coordinator of WWF’s climate change and energy program in Brazil, says: "Belo Monte could become a financial fiasco. The high social, environmental and financial costs should draw the Brazilian government into a wider reflection on whether or not it is actually feasible to go through with the project." ...
