Wind, Solar & Coconuts: SIDS and Climate Change | Care2 Causes

I support solar and wind power for small island developing states, but I am concerned about pushing for greater coconut exports. Planting more coconuts invariably means clearing more rainforests on the islands (this would be volcanic high islands, not atolls). Coconut trees tend to strip the soil of nutrients, too. Coconut trees occur naturally in the littoral zone (in the beachy areas just beyond the tidal range), and their seeds are carried on ocean currents. Pacific Islands typically have more than enough coconuts planted to meet people's subsistence needs, in terms of food and fiber and other products. In order to extract coconut oil for use as a fuel (it can be used in diesel engines as fuel - one kilometer to the coconut!), we are talking a near total diversion of coconuts into production (similar to how demand for biofuels diverts crops out of food production).
