Are Canada’s disastrous tar sands coming your way?

Another depressing piece of our energy picture, one that is likely to get much worse before it gets better. Last week I attended a talk by Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council and part of Obama's commission investigating the BP oil spill. She said the panel was thinking not only of the inevitability of continued deepwater drilling, but of the certainty of Big Oil moving into the Arctic Sea in a Big Way when it made its recommendations. Tar sand oil requires large amounts of water and natural gas to produce, and the process is dangerously close to a wash in terms of energy created vs. energy expended.
