Global Trend Away from Death Penalty Continues

As Gretchen Hoshida stated, it costs more to execute prisoners than to keep them incarcerated for life. So to those who think it is costly to keep an offender in prison for life costs more than execution, you are not doing your research. The cost of the appeals process alone, for a death sentence quickly overtakes the cost of life in prison. These number of appeals a person sentenced to death is eligible for are necessary for the death penalty process to be constitutional. Therefore; limiting appeals is a non-starter. There are a few reasons we still execute prisoners in the U.S. most notably; the fact that life in prison in many states does not actually mean life in prison.
