A Fresh Take on Sea-Level Rise

For readers who are following the science of sea-level rise, a new overview paper has been published that makes indispensable reading. One of the great experts in the field, John A. Church of Australia, and his collaborator Neil J. White analyze records from instruments called tide gauges, starting in the 19th century and running into the 21st, and they also incorporate the satellite measurements of sea level that have been available since 1993. Understanding sea level is one of the most vexing problems in climate science, largely because the tide-gauge record is plagued by enormous difficulties, including spotty coverage in the Southern Hemisphere.
