On Tuesday, a House Natural Resources subcommittee held a hearing on two bills that would repeal portions of the Lacey Act . While the law is a century old, the bills mainly challenge amendments passed in 2008 that made it illegal to import wood into the United States that was unlawfully exported under another country’s statutes. Two federal raids of the Gibson Guitar factories in Nashville in search of questionable wood in 2009 and 2011 have put the Lacey Act in the public spotlight, with critics arguing that the government is overreaching and that it is unreasonable for American companies’ practices to be dictated by the laws of other countries.
