Vessel Sets Sail in Search of Tsunami Debris

Pangaea Exploration A team of explorers will travel from Japan to Maui in the hope of tracking detritus from the March 2011 tsunami. Last fall I wrote about marine scientists’ plans to track and study the huge amount of debris that was swept out to sea by the tsunami that struck northeastern Japan in March 2011. On Tuesday, the Sea Dragon set sail from the Marshall Islands in the Pacific on the first leg of the expedition. In three weeks, the 72-foot vessel is expected to dock in Tokyo, where some environmental activities will be organized during a one-week layover. The second leg of the expedition starts on May 30 and ends a month later in Maui. The organizers, 5 Gyres and the Algalita Marine Research Foundation , two nonprofit groups that campaign against plastic pollution, and Pangaea Exploration, which operates the Sea Dragon, are allotting nine crew spaces to members ...
