Actually, the real holiday is Earth Day — the 43rd to be held since Gaylord Nelson, then a Democratic senator from Wisconsin, proposed that a “national teach-in” on the environment be held on April 22, 1970. (In a reflection of those times, Mr. Nelson had no trouble lining up a congressional Republican, Pete McCloskey of California, to serve as a co-chairman of the event.) Different days indeed. So, how best to celebrate, honor, reflect on or brood about the planet? Here are a few ideas: If you’re lucky enough to live near a national park, you can observe Earth Day by heading into the relative wilderness or maybe just going on a picnic. As an extra incentive, the National Park Service is offering free admission to all 397 parks from April 21 to April 29.
