Today is World Autism Awareness Day:

Once thought to be a rare disorder, autism is now diagnosed in 1 out of every 110 children in the US according to the most recent figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental disability that affects an individual's communicative and social abilities; sensory processing can also be affected. Autism is understood now as a spectrum condition, in that those diagnosed with it can vary widely in their cognitive and other abilities. Some individuals on the autism spectrum attend college, live on their own, marry, and have children while others---including my soon-to-be-14 year old son, Charlie ---will need lifelong supervision and support. Currently we do now know the cause of autism. Many scientists think that genetics play a significant role; environmental factors have also been mentioned.
