Don't Kill the Electric Car

Nissan Leaf owners cite the lack of gas consumption as a buying consideration. My article in the Automobiles section on Friday addressed the question of electric-vehicle greenhouse-gas emissions. Of course, a fully electric car or a plug-in hybrid running on battery power alone does not emit any greenhouse gases from the tailpipe, but according to a report by the Union of Concerned Scientists , in some regions of the United States the electric utility that provides power to charge the electric vehicle’s battery may be spewing a considerable amount of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
