Devastating Bat Fungus Invades From Europe

Associated Press A little brown bat with white-nose syndrome in a cave in Vermont. A study published this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences confirms that the fungus Geomyces destructans causes white-nose syndrome, a disease that has killed more than 5.5 million bats in North America since being discovered in a cave near Albany in 2006. “Most everybody thought that this was the case, but there was no proof this was true until now,” said Sébastien Puechmaille , a bat researcher at Ireland’s University College Dublin, who was not involved in the research. The study also strongly suggested that the fungus comes from Europe, making it an invasive species, and was likely introduced accidentally by somebody who had recently traveled to a European cave.
