These two cultural icons may seem to have little in common but thanks to a new business model, peppers are now helping pandas. It didn’t start out that way. The sale of Sichuan pepper has long been a primary source of income for villagers living close to the Baodinggou Nature Reserve, which is home to 36 giant pandas and other endangered species. With most of the profit from pepper sales siphoned off by middlemen, locals were forced to make ends meet by collecting firewood and foraging for vegetables and medicinal plants from the wild.
