Salmon Farmers in Chile Are Displacing Endangered Penguins By Stealing Gravel From Islote Conejos Commentary by Sea Shepherd Chile’s Marco García León A few days ago we received a report regarding a salmon farm-Salmonera Mainstream- who has been extracting gravel in Islote Conejos. This islet used to be the home of 600 Humboldt and Magellanic penguins-both endangered species-until this company exploited their habitat and the animals had to leave their home. Witnesses saw two workers from Salmonera Mainstream filling sacks with gravel. After some time they returned to the islet and found 30 sacks buried, waiting to be sent to the salmon farm later. Before we were given this information, Salmonera Mainstream had been reported to authorities, but the authorities refused to take action.
