The latest setback for scientists involves a decision by Karnataka’s chief wildlife warden, Brij Kishore Singh, to deny new research permits or extend current ones for scientists in the state’s five tiger reserves. “Tiger reserves in this country are inviolate,” he said in an interview. Mr. Singh argues that the presence of humans inevitably results in the absence of tigers and that his goal is to minimize disturbance. “We’re removing everyone so we do not find unnecessary researchers to be crowding the tiger reserves,” he said. But Alan Rabinowitz , chief executive of the conservation organization Panthera , said that no evidence exists that research has a negative impact on tigers or other big cats. “To bring up the issue that scientists in tiger core areas are somehow hurting the survival or conservation of tigers is just an absurdity,” he said.
