Solar Flares: The Beautiful Lights That Could End the World

First, the boring stuff: Operating on an 11-year solar cycle, the sun is an always active, yet fairly predictable star. During these cycles, the intensity of solar flares gradually intensifies, usually causing little to no interference. That said however, the intensity of solar cycles can go from extremely quiet due to a low point in the cycle which is referred to as the solar minimum, and then suddenly become more active and quite powerful.
