The Animals That Make Us Human

Jack Revkin Sara, a mixed-breed dog adopted by the Revkin-Mechaley family from a shelter in 2001. Temple Grandin , the extraordinary expert on animal behavior who wrote “Animals Make Us Human ,” is remarkable in many ways — among them through her ability to surmount, and to some extent enlist , her autism in creating a career in livestock management, research and authorship. But her greatest gift, to me, has been her ability to teach others how to perceive the human-animal relationship at least a little bit in reverse. My family and I had to do a lot of this in recent months when our elder dog, Sara, born in 2000 and adopted from a shelter a year later, was diagnosed with bone cancer. The first hurdle was a decision on amputating a forelimb. This question divided the household initially, but we agreed to pursue the surgery as a way to give Sara some more time to walk the w...
