Today's OECD report , Environmental Outlook to 2050: The consequences of inaction , paints a bleak picture of the state of the planet by the middle of the century if the global economy continues along a business-as-usual path. Here, we pick out some of the projections that represent the biggest threat to businesses that fail to address looming environmental risks. Energy : World energy demand in 2050 will be 80 per cent higher than today, with most of the growth coming from emerging economies. Without a change in policy, up to 85 per cent of our power will come from fossil fuels. Emissions : Greenhouse gas emissions will increase 50 per cent, driven in large part by a 70 per cent rise in energy-related CO2 emissions. The atmospheric concentration of GHGs could reach 685 parts per million (ppm), when most scientists agree anything over 450ppm by 2050 is likely to expose the...
