Part of Hempstead Bay on Long Island will be closed to shellfish harvesting for at least seven months as state environmental officials test the quality of the water, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said on Friday. All of the underwater lands in Hempstead Bay west of the northbound lanes of Wantagh Parkway – about 7,100 acres – will be closed to clam harvesting starting on Saturday, the department said. Officials said that water quality data provided by the Town of Hempstead was deemed unreliable under standards set by the federal Food and Drug Administration and that the state agency’s laboratory would take over the testing for the next months.
