Switching refrigeration units to run on CO2 rather than more powerful greenhouse gases has cut Sainsbury's carbon footprint by 250,000 tonnes since it began the conversion process two years ago, the supermarket giant has revealed. This week the retailer opened its 100th store to use CO2-powered refrigeration units, adding that due to the success of the programme it has increased its target of fitting 135 stores with the technology by 2014 and will now aim to revamp 250 stores.
