Uncontrolled hunting is just part of the picture as even with decent enforcement of wildlife protection laws the prospects would be dim for many of the larger species there. Lambir Hills National Park is an island of lowland mixed dipterocarp forest in a sea of oil palm plantations. At just 70 square kilometers the park is too small to maintain populations of species that require large home ranges (e.g. clouded leopard). For other species, such as the large hornbills that nest in hollow trees, the lack of suitable habitat in the surrounding landscape will have also contributed to the population decline. Hunting has hammered what has managed to hang on in the park but I don’t think that it is driven by poverty as much as custom. The surrounding communities have eaten from the rainforest’s rich larder for generations. The problem now is that the larder has shrunk.
