For Julie Simpson, president of the pro-chicken group Urban Chicken Advocates of Nashville , it was the failure of a proposal to legalize the birds in 2009 that inspired her to think about raising hens. “It simply made sense to me to have a few chickens in my backyard,” she wrote in an e-mail. “I was concerned about where my food was coming from, and having backyard hens was one small thing I could control. I really saw them as an extension of my garden.” But opponents see the birds as a potentially noisy, smelly, predator-attracting nuisance at best, and a health threat at worst. The animal services staff in Hamilton, Ontario, where politicians are considering a ban on urban chickens, has cautioned that keeping domestic poultry, “can put humans in close contact with poultry viruses such that the potential health risks associated with the keeping of poultry outweighs the p...
