Green Blog: A Scramble to Rescue Dolphins

In just over three weeks, 129 common dolphins have stranded themselves along 20 miles of Cape Cod beaches. While mass strandings of marine mammals are hardly new in the area — even the Pilgrims witnessed them — this series is different. It’s the biggest single-species stranding that Cape Cod has ever seen, and the dolphins keep on coming, even though most of the stranding events are over in just one or two days. No explanation has emerged for the dimensions of this year’s strandings. But the volume is taking a huge toll on the volunteer network of responders and on the tight budget of the Marine Mammal Rescue and Research Program , a program of the International Fund for Animal Welfare that coordinates...
