Beyond Hype, a Closer Look at New York's Choice on Shale Gas

Throughout the four years this issue has been debated, the forgotten voice has been the upstate landowner. There seems to be two sides to the issue: the person who uses energy, but doesn’t feel comfortable living near its development, and the industry that coaxes it from the ground. The former considers himself an environmentalist. I disagree. The true environmentalists are the farmers and other upstaters who have spent a lifetime taking care of their land, paying taxes, and braving the hardships that often come with rural life. NY uses more natural gas than any other state except CA and TX. But it imports 95 percent of it . Many of the natural gas issue opponents acknowledge that natural gas is better than coal and oil, but feel we can get the gas from somewhere else.
