Green Blog: 32,100 and Counting: New Yorkers Speak Out on Fracking

Officials with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation say they have counted 32,100 statements so far since the close of a public comment period on Wednesday on their proposal to allow hydrofracking in the state. The count continues, said Emily DeSantis, a spokeswoman for the department, and the tally may exceed 40,000 by the time all of the letters are accounted for. Some batches of comments are letters released by organized groups that were signed by individual commenters, but each is nonetheless counted as another comment. Ms. DeSantis said “many boxes” remained to be processed. The proposal to allow horizontal hydraulic fracturing, a method of drilling for natural gas involving the injection of millions of gallons of chemically laced water, has caused a furor around the state. The number of comments counted so far is a record for a state environment...
