The first has been the rise in GDP. However, as NEF’s Economic health check shows, a scratch below the surface reveals a very different story. Although Osborne was quick to hail a recovery, this is in fact only a recovery for some; while the rich are getting richer, average real earnings are continuing to fall. With the usual media flurry around the budget, you’d be forgiven for having missed the second apparently ‘good news’ story of the week: the ONS Measuring National Well-Being update – Life in the UK 2014.
