Reiterating that carbon dioxide need not be the only focus, an international team of scientists suggests 14 ways of controlling emissions of methane and soot , from cleaning up cookstoves to changing cultivation methods for rice paddies. If adopted more widely, the scientists calculate, these methods would reduce projected global warming by 0.9 degrees Fahrenheit by the year 2050. [Associated Press]. A federal judge in Miami commends the Florida governor’s proposal to break a legal logjam on cleaning up the Everglades but emphasizes that a firm financial commitment is still absent.
