Waterkeepers Urge Governor to Declare State of Emergency on Pig Deaths from PED | EcoWatch via @ecowatch
Industrial hog facilities across North Carolina have been struck by (PED), a fast-spreading virus that kills piglets. PED is believed to have originated in China and appeared in the U.S. last spring. Since then, the epidemic has spread to more than two-dozen states. In North Carolina, home to around 10 million hogs and the highest concentration of hog feeding operations in the country, nearly 100 cases per week have been reported, however, that number is most likely fairly low since farmer’s aren’t required to report new cases of PED. While PED cannot be transmitted directly to humans, the massive numbers of pigs that have died from this virus pose a significant threat to public health if not disposed of in a manner that is safe to the public. There is currently little or no local or state government oversight of carcass disposal.
