My article over the weekend on Mexico’s booming market in organic tomatoes bound for the United States raises an important question: Do Americans really need to eat organic tomatoes in the winter, when they are hard to grow naturally here? During the years I lived in Italy – which arguably boasts the world’s most exquisite and varied tomato cultivation — it would have been sacrilege to eat tomatoes out of season. When tomatoes were not growing in the Mediterranean, there were simply no tomatoes to be found in Italian supermarkets.
