The Ad Man Behind Occupy Wall Street, and 'Buy Nothing Day': #ows

There’s a fascinating article in the New Yorker by Mattathias Schwartz that is largely about Kalle Lasn, a rogue retired marketing consultant I interviewed just before Thanksgiving, 2007 — the first year of this blog — about his “Buy Nothing Day” campaign. Schwartz’s article charts how Lasn and a colleague at his Adbusters magazine, devoted to ending the consumer culture that Lasn once helped fuel, created the phrase”Occupy Wall Street” and set the date. Social networks, linking people energized by a variegated array of frustrations, did the rest. As readers here already know, I have nothing against protest, although I’m less a fan of sit-ins than do -ins .
