A January 2009 study published in CONSERVATION BIOLOGY documented that millions of American bullfrogs commercially raised in SE Asia are shipped to New York and California every year for the live animal food markets for human consumption. These markets are generally found in major metropolitan areas around the country. Of the frogs necropsied, 62 percent tested positive for the chytrid fungus. Though it's illegal to do so, these same frogs are commonly bought and released into the wild by well-meaning but uninformed people, causing major problems for our native wildlife. This trade should be stopped, esp. in light of the fact that the chytrid fungus is a prime suspect in the extinctions of dozens of species of amphibians around the world in recent years.
