Dot Earth Blog: What Links a Sinking Boat and Rising CO2?

Putting the semantics of “skeptic” and “denier” aside for the moment, is it possible to consider an analogy? You’re in the middle of the ocean in a boat which springs a leak, allowing water into the hull. Do you fix the leak or wait to see if the water will reach a “dangerous” level? Fixing the leak will necessitate stopping at a nearby “safe-haven” island, taking you off course and delaying your journey — costing you time and money. You decide to push on toward your destination. Time goes by, and the water level gets higher. Meanwhile, you’ve put a lot of distance between your boat and the safe-haven island, but you still have a long way to go to reach your destination. Still, there is no proof that you boat will sink, even though the water seems to be coming in at an accelerated rate. (In fact, there is no “proof” that your boat will sink until it sinks.)
