Peter McBride The long expanse where the Colorado River has run dry, not reaching the ocean. When the conservation writer Jonathan Waterman decided to investigate the health of the Colorado River, he took it to extremes. In the spring of 2008, he packed up his supplies and set out on a 1,450-mile source-to-sea journey down the Colorado River. Five months later he emerged from the experience, several pounds lighter and with a full beard, and went on to write two books and become a spokesman for the Colorado River. “I wanted to alert people to what was going on with this iconic river in our backyard that we basically take for granted,” he said. “This river is in trouble — it’s not the river it used to be.” The photographer, filmmaker and native Coloradan Peter McBride joined Mr. Waterman on part of his journey.
