Dot Earth Blog: An Island Adviser Sees Promise in Durban Climate Talks

Here’s a depressing suggestion: that the upwards spiral in global carbon emissions seems to be matched only by the speed with which the international negotiations to deal with the resulting climate change are unravelling. Gloom abounds. No one thinks that the ‘global treaty’ on climate that was heralded amidst much hype back in Copenhagen two years ago can be achieved this year in Durban. In fact many governments seem quite content for the treaty to be kicked into the post-2020 long grass, by which time it will be too late for any putative deal to keep the world on the 2-degrees trajectory that was supposedly agreed last year at Cancun. Doing nothing until the end of the decade would also likely mean curtains for low-lying areas and small island states, including the Maldives, whose President Mohamed Nasheed I advise on climate change issues.
