Last May, Sister Margaret McBride was “automatically excommunicated” from the Catholic community after approving a life-saving abortion at an Arizona Catholic hospital. Now, six months later, the sister is receiving an award . Call to Action, a Catholic group that believes in non-traditional Catholic stances like female priests, gay marriage and other issues considered anathema to the doctrine, has chosen to honor McBride for her stance. “Call To Action recognizes Sister Margaret’s careful work with a complex issue, her courage in a time of censorship and public pressure, and her witness to the need to stand firm in the face of opposition while striving to protect life in all its venues,” a group spokesperson said.
