The Difficulty of Drawing Lines Around Ice By FELICITY BARRINGER Satellite images of part of the Blosseville Coast in eastern Greenland from Aug. 30, 2000, left, and Aug. 20, 2010 — days closest to the minimum extent of ice when there was least cloud cover. The land area shown measures about 500 miles north-south and 250 miles east-west. The embarrassing error made by cartographers at a HarperCollins subsidiary recently put climate scientists on the attack against publishers over the extent to which Greenland’s ice sheet has retreated. But after the scientific strike force had done its work and the publishers apologized, a point of agreement between the two emerged. It is, both said, hard to show accurately the ebb and flow of glaciers and to map their retreat.
