FDA Announces Core Network to Respond to Food-Borne Illness

The precision at which the FDA responds to food-borne illness could be getting a lot better as a result of the FDA Coordinated Outbreak Response and Evaluation (CORE) Network . According to the FDA , the CORE Network will be made up of epidemiologists, veterinarians, microbiologists, environmental health specialists, emergency coordinators, and risk communications specialists working full time to investigate and respond to food-borne illness scares in an effort to cut them off at the knees. Though originating in the FDA, CORE will work with the CDC and the USDA on the effort. The CORE Network will be headed up by Dr. Kathleen F. Gensheimer, M.D., M.P.H., who most recently served as the state epidemiologist for Maine.
