It's Ecological Debt Day - for the rest of 2011 we are living beyond nature's means

Image by angela7dreams via Flickr. Just like any company, nature has a budget - it can only produce so many resources and absorb so much waste each year. The problem is our demand on nature's services is exceeding what it can provide putting at risk the life-supporting systems on which we all depend. Tuesday 27th September is the day when the world as a whole goes into ‘ecological debt’, consuming more resources and generating more waste than ecosystems can produce and absorb. From then onwards humanity surpasses nature’s budget for the year and operates in overdraft. The result is that for the rest of the year our supply of natural resources - like trees and fish - continues to shrink, while our waste - primarily carbon dioxide - accumulates. For the rest of the year, our ecological deficit grows by depleting our biocapacity and accumulating waste such as CO2 in the atmos...
