Today in Ottawa hundreds gathered to tell the govt: Stop the reckless expansion of the tar sands!

The action today—and the risk that some faced in being arrested—was inspired not only by our American cousins from just a few weeks ago, but by a long history of people peacefully demonstrating against injustice. The black men who sat at Whites Only lunch counters in Greenboro, North Carolina in 1960, knowing that they would be served nothing but abuse. The thousands who, in 1930, joined Mahatma Gandhi in defying the British and their unfair salt laws, and were arrested. The thousands of men and women who gathered earlier this year in Tahrir Square in Cairo to inform President Hosni Mubarak that he was no longer needed, since democracy had arrived in Egypt.
