My brief review of Dan Yergin's "The Quest" at @NYTimes @DotEarth:

I’m often asked, usually by someone new to energy, for a good book that will help them get a broad and solid sense of the subject. That usually sparks a brief lament, since with the possible exception of Paul Roberts’s somewhat outdated The End of Oil , there isn’t really anything out there that fits that bill. The are great books about the history of oil , smart treatments of climate change , and encyclopedic tours of energy from a technical perspective, but there is nothing that cuts across all the elements that matter in a serious and careful way. (I’m not including Tom Friedman’s Hot, Flat, and Crowded , which contains lots of interesting ideas, but isn’t all that consistently grounded in reality.)
