Deep Oceans Responsible for Decade Long Warming Hiatus

Deep Oceans Responsible for Decade Long Warming Hiatus

The 2000s were Earth’s warmest decade in record keeping, but it wasn’t until 2010 that a single year broke past the mark for warmest year on record, previously set in 1998. In other words, the warming trend had flattened out for a little bit. Why was this? According to researchers at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the Bureau of Meteorology in Australia, Earth’s deep oceans at times absorb enough heat to flatten the rate of global warming. In fact, they can do so and affect the global warming for up to a decade at a time. “We will see global warming go through hiatus periods in the future,” says NCAR’s Gerald Meehl, lead author of the study. “However, these periods would likely last only about a decade or so, and warming would then resume. This study illustrates one reason why global temperatures do not simply rise in a straight line.” The researche...
