The next generation of offshore wind farms are set to be built far out to sea, generating more power from strong winds with larger turbines. But these powerful wind farms pose a new problem for developers trying to access turbines as far as 290km from shore in high seas and stormy weather. FURTHER READING Seahorses and navy ships: winners of the Carbon Trust's Offshore Wind Accelerator competition Hovercraft could cut the cost of offshore wind energy Now a competition being run by the Carbon Trust has identified 13 new concepts that could ease access and help cut the cost of energy. They include a giant robotic arm and a vessel resembling a seahorse. Backed by offshore wind farm developers including E.ON and Dong Energy, the project aims to make transfers possible 300 days a year, instead of the 210 days a year that current technology allows. This could limit turbine down-...
