Replacing Coal With Gas Is No Panacea, Study Says

National Center for Atmospheric Research Shifting from coal to natural gas will do little to mitigate global warming because of the methane leaked in natural gas operations, a study suggests. However, a slight improvement can be seen when the level of leaks is lower. Although power plants fired by natural gas emit about half the carbon dioxide that conventional coal plants do, shifting from coal to natural gas to generate electricity will do little to slow climate change, according to a new study from the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Highlighting the complexities of practicing climate science, the report challenges the notion that natural gas can serve as a “bridge fuel” to slow global warming as people migrate from carbon-emitting fossil fuels to clean renewables.
