Mexico's poor suffer as #foodspeculation fuels tortilla crisis

When Ignacio talks about maize his entire demeanour changes. His eyes open just that little bit wider, his arms and hands become more active and a voice that was previously subdued seems more direct and passionate. For thousands of years, through the ancient civilisations of the Aztecs and Maya to present day Mexico, maize has been ground down to make corn tortillas. They are still eaten at every meal - breakfast, lunch and dinner. For many Mexicans, particularly the estimated 40 million living on less than $5 a day (£3), tortillas account for almost half of their average daily calorie intake. As a whole, the country consumes 23 times more maize than rice. It is not just that maize is an important part of their daily diet, Ignacio explains, it's much more than that.
