2011-09-13 Solomon Islands To Ban Dolphin Exports Following recent reports of a possible live dolphin export to China , and pressure from several conservation organizations over continued dolphin trade, WDCS has welcomed an announcement by the Solomon Islands government that it will ban all dolphin exports from the 1st January 2012. Previously, the Solomon Islands have controversially exported Indo Pacific bottlenose dolphins to Mexico , the United Arab Emirates , the Philippines and Malaysia , starting in 2003. This decision comes on the back of the recent announcement by the Animals Committee of CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, to agree to retain the Solomon Islands population of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins in its Review of Significant Trade, which looks at trade in species where there are concerns about its sustainability.
