Can Obama Escape the Alberta Tar Pit?: #tarsands

I’ve been studiously avoiding coming down one way or the other on the national interest issue, in part because I’m pretty ambivalent, but I guess it’s time to get off the fence. I think that approval is ultimately in the U.S. national interest, so long as U.S. regulators ensure that the pipeline is operated safely. I do not buy the argument that the pipeline would be a massive windfall for U.S. security. I also think that climate change needs to be taken seriously. That said, reducing emissions by blocking the pipeline would likely be far more costly (primarily in terms of higher world oil prices but also, potentially, in terms of reduced Bakken production ) than almost any other emissions-cutting approach that serious people contemplate.
